We know that black people were not allowed many things compared to whites: education, jobs, right to vote, front seats in public transport (exemplified in the book) and so on.
I think that the best example in Lee’s book is the fact that Tom is not allowed to show pity for Mayella. He is sorry for her, but he is considered guilty for publicly showing his feelings, even if he is maybe the only person who considers her a PERSON, not a property. But blacks are not allowed to feel pity for whites!
