Jews are forced to deny their identity, their ego, their Self, to switch roles/ identities, to pretend being someone else. They are forced even to think like their oppressors (the scene when the narrator-girl plays with some children and speaks with disgust about Jews). Also the scene to the station when the so-called grandmother asks the girl not to look in the direction of the ”herded” people because they were Jews. That was the first betrayal. The second one was when making the cross, the Christian cross, because she was no longer a Jew, she was a Pole, a Christian. What was the mistake of the grandmother”s question? The idea that she din not learn the symbol of a cross, the fear they could be discovered. Isn”t this the betrayal of the race, species or even humanity???
