The Sagacious Rat by Ambrose Bierce
There existed once a Rat that wanted to go out and search for food, but when he wanted to get out of his hole he saw the cat waiting for him. So the Rat went to his friends at the bottom of the hole and asked one of them to join him in his search for food by being canny and saying to his Friend that he wants to join him because he "could not deny [himself] the pleasure of such distinguished company". When they wanted to proceed, the Rat said to his Friend that he should go first because he is such an intelligent rat. So, his friend went first and was caught by the Cat and the Rat went untouched.
The moral of this story is the idea that we should not trust anybody, we must be very careful who do we trust, because not all that say are our friends, truly are. Sometimes we could not even trust ourselves.
