It appears that science is present here from the very first lines The king was in his private profession, under government. The queen’s father had been a medical man out of town and..a very.very weird thing is that the eldest daughter, Alicia, took care of them all. I remember a discussion we had in class when teacher asked how many of us had read this fairy tale as a child and only Cristina raised her hand. Well, I must confess that I also read it as a child because I didn’t see the king as a man that had money troubles. The fact that surprised me was her choice; she used the fishbone for money and not for health. I expected her to use it for something more spiritual than material. Still she respected her promise and she used it when they really needed it. |

The Victorian story "The Magic Fishbone" by Charles Dickens-strange for a fairy tale, a king who is working? A king who has at least a name?...and 19 children. A rich and a poor family. Alicia the elder daughter takes care of all the little princes and princesses. She is the wise-heroine of the story and the owner of the magic fishbone (which she will use only when the family really need it). "The Magic Fishbone" or the Holiday romance is a fairy tale for children indeed, it has magic elements: fairy Grandmarina, a magic fan, the magic fishbone and a magic confessor-the Duchess. |
