Honestly, even before reading the book, the fruit in the title inspired diversity. Ethnicity is in itself bringing about colourful behaviours - they trigger interest because they are different from our own. The story feels to follow the same stream as of a soap-opera's - not that i'm a fan of the genre - but i was curious to see what's next, what happens in the following chapter. This shows Cisnero's talent as an authentic and devoted writer. In my opinion, each of us can at least partly identify ourselves with one of the characters, there is a multitude of real-life situations that keep the reader connected and indirectly emotionally involved.

In this book are more similarities between Esperanza and the author of the book. Both have roots in Chicago.They both have this sort of connection to like a crowded urban sort of like minority populated neighborhood on the south side of Chicago and they both have this dream to have a really nice house.In the introduction: ,,As a girl she dreamed about having a silent home just for herself the way other women dream of their weddings” . In this quotation, Sandra introduces herself and also introduces Esperanza, the main character.
In introduction, Sandra introduces this whole idea of what her culture and her family especially her father expects of her as a woman so basically talks about how her father had this goal for her to be a weather girl or to just get married off and have babies and stuff but she expresses that that s not something she wanted like she had so many other goals in mind like she wanted to travel and write and just enjoyed her life and not be limited.In this book, Sandra uses stories which she heard.

It is an auto-biographical book.

The house Esperanza is looking for could be a real house, a good looking building with a big nice door that only she could lock and unlock. But, it could also be a metaphore. The one thing she wants to find is another way to be. She doesn't want to accept that the only way she could change her social class would be by marrying a rich man, she rejects the ideea of being submissive to a brutal husband as some of her friends are, and she totally hates the ideea of having to raise children in a place where she would always feel an outsider. The life she has on Mango Street and everything that follows doesn't look very promising for Esperanza. Unless she finds her way she would end up like all the other miserable characters in the book.

Esperanza found a way to go through all her sorrow---writing.
She started writing poems that she showed only to people that she trusted, she started writing down her memories and thoughts to make them more bearable: "I put it down on paper and then the ghost not ache so much."
